What size entrance mat you need and how to measure for it

An entrance mat that’s too short won’t stop the dirt, and one that covers half the reception gets in the way. Getting the size right takes five minutes and a tape measure.

Updated:

Width: the doorway plus a margin

Measure the width of the opening and add a margin on each side so nobody steps in on the bare floor. With double doors, measure with both leaves open. With revolving or automatic doors, the usable width is the opening people actually walk through.

Depth: the more steps, the better

Dirt and water stay on the mat as people walk across it. A deeper mat takes in more steps and cleans shoes better. That’s why, at entrances with heavy traffic or frequent rain, it pays to extend it inwards as far as the space allows.

If the corridor is long, the A3 goes up to 12 m in a single piece.

If it sits in a matwell

Measure the inside of the matwell at several points (older matwells aren’t always square) and note down the smallest measurement. Tell us it’s for a matwell so we can take that into account when manufacturing.
